Magnificent four reale from the ATOCHA. Weighs 13.5 grams and it is virtually like the day it was made around 1586. This fabulous Coin was obviously found in the middle of a chest and had no sea wear what-so-ever. It was minted by Assayer Juan Ballesteros at the Potosi mint Around 1586. Ballesteros was known for the quality of his minting process and the incredible Coins that he made. This coin was recovered from Atocha chest four, and was part of the great napkin deal with chest nine. The two chests were purchased by Atocha Marine archaeologist and conservator James Sinclair, whose personal signature is on the certificate from the ATOCHA. Jim cleaned and conserved most of the coins recovered from the Atocha mother load in 1985 and 1986. He has also worked the Margarita, The 1715 Fleet, The Titanic, The Lusitania, the Central America and many other wrecks. The last few years he has been a mainstay on the television show “Cooper’s Treasure” on the history channel. This coin is very scarce from the ATOCHA. It would sell at the Mel Fisher museum and gift shop in Key West for $6900 and up. This one would probably have been given a grade 1+ which would add $4000 to the value.. Check out their prices online. Don’t miss out on this fabulous treasure coin. This quality is rarely if ever seen any more.
