This Atocha four reale was minted at the Potosi Mint by the famed dyslexic assayer Juan Ximenez de Tapia. Tapia made many errors and reversals in the manufacturing of these coins. This one is no exception. It has reversed lions and castles on the Crusaders Cross. The obverse bears the royal shield and crown of Philip the third of Spain. To the left of the shield is the P Mintmark beneath which is the T assayer's Mark. To the right of the shield is the denomination IIII in Roman numerals. The reverse side features the Crusader's Cross. This Silver Cob must have been a magnificent coin when it was struck. All the details are there. The only thing that keeps it from being a grade 1 is the porosity and sea wear. This coin is mounted in a heavy sterling silver bezel with a barrel hoop at the top. It would have already been upgraded to a grade 2 for sure by now. Grade 3 four reales sell for $2400 at the Fishers in Key West, and that is with no bezel at all. This one is accompanied by the original certificate of authenticity as it was issued by Treasure Salvors incorporated in Key West in 1986. It was found as part of the mother load of the ATOCHA in 1985
