Product Description
Signal cannons were used as messengers between ships at sea or mountains in South America. They were placed on the rail of a ship or on a rock and fired off with a loud report which could be heard for miles, signaling other ships or other people of their whereabouts. They were also used to fire a small mortar round, and the small ones were even used as hand grenades. The small group came up from South America years ago. This one, number eight, Weighs 46 Troy ounces and is 4”3 3/4 Inches tall and 2 1/4 inches wide at the base. Powder was loaded in the bore and packed. The small hole seen at the bottom of the first picture, had fire applied to it which set The Cannon off. These cannons were cast by hand, and then hand finished before use. This one was a miscast, and was probably put aside for recasting at a later date. It was never fired. Rare and hardly seen.
