Extremely nice eight reale from the 1715 fleet. Mexico City Mint. 26.25 Grams, Coin # 1715-737
This eight reale, weighing 26.25 grams, was recovered on the East Coast of Florida from one of the wrecks of the 1715 fleet galleons. This fleet was loaded with millions of pesos of gold and silver treasure which was in route from Havana to Spain. The fleet was hit by a hurricane July 31, 1715, sinking all but one of 13 ships. Over 1000 lives were lost. This group of wrecks has been featured in the National Geographic twice and then in countless television and newspaper articles. This coin was minted at the Mexico City mint between 1702 and 1715. The obverse bears the royal shield and crown of Philip fifth of Spain. The reverse features the beautiful Florenzada Cross with lions and castles unique to this mint. coins from Mexico during this time were truly struck by hand and often show minimal detail even though they are nearly full weight in silver . Prices have increased on these particular coins quite a bit in the last three or four years because of the 300th anniversary of the sinking of the Fleet. A certificate of authenticity is included.
