This gold doubloon was minted in Madrid in 1781. The obverse features the bust of Charles III of Spain with the date below. The reverse features the royal shield and crown of Spain with the mint mark M to the left, and the assayer’s mark DV to the right. The coin is 22 karat gold and though from Spain, this coin was legal to use in America until 1856. It is considered America’s first one dollar gold piece. It is mount it in a 14 karat gold bezel and has a 14 karat gold bale at the top with 1/4 carat of real diamonds set on the bale. Gold coins like this I called doubloons and/or pirate coins.
