These very early coins are considered “priceless“ at the museum in Key West. Each was found loose on the bottom of the ocean and have a lot of sea wear. What makes them extremely valuable is that they have the original five signature certificate as issued in 1975. Each has the original signature of Duncan Matthewson, marine archaeologist, Eugene Lyons, historian, Austin Fowles, conservator, Mel Fisher president of Treasure Salvors, and his wife Dolores Fisher secretary. The original picture of the coin is also on the certificate as are all the seals from that. Grading was done by points in those days to establish a relevant to value. This coin would be a grade four from that time although I considered a grade 3. Grade 4 Four reales sell at the museum now for $1200 a piece, and that’s not for one with these very rare certificates. A incredible Coin for any historian or collector of coins from this fabulous shipwreck.
